Class 204 / 205
Hampshire / Berkshire DEMU
15th June 2004

No. 205009 was seen at London Bridge pairing with Class 207 No. 207202, the latter carrying the name
''Brighton Royal Pavilion''. No. 205009 survived into preservation, and can be found far north, on the
Eden Valley Railway in Cumbria. © David Glasspool

Two-car unit No. 205001 is seen trailing behind three-car unit No. 205009 into London Bridge station
with a service from Uckfield. Under TOPS, two-car and three-car units became Classes 204 and 205
respectively. When the final two-car units were upgraded to three vehicles, all units acquired the ''205''
prefix, but when these same units were degraded again to just the two vehicles, the ''205'' number was
retained. Interestingly, however, it appears that the pre-TOPs classification was reversed - note above
the left-hand buffer, the code ''2H''. © David Glasspool

Following on from the above photograph, we see No. 205001 loading up for its return journey to Uckfield
during the evening rush hour. The head code blinds have yet to be rolled round. © David Glasspool

No. 205001 is now seen departing London Bridge with the return service to Uckfield, with the classic trainshed
forming the backdrop. A complete redevelopment of the London Bridge station environs commenced in 2010,
and it appears that this historic structure will be removed. The latest plans outline dismantling the trainshed,
for re-erection elsewhere. © David Glasspool

Continuing on from the previous picture, No. 205009 is seen trailing on the rear of the formation. Between
the buffers can be seen the buck-eye coupling and a Pullman-style rubbing plate. © David Glasspool
4th December 2004

No. 205001 is seen pairing with No. 205009 once again, but this time on 4th December 2004 heading
London-bound through Gatwick Airport. The black triangle indicates to platform staff at which end of
the train the guard's / luggage area is located. This view gives a good impression of how much room the
engine compartment took up. © David Glasspool
